Boards & Committees

Boards and committees play an important role in city governance. Some committees focus on particular services like parks or the library. Others help to make decisions on things like land use and the city’s budget.

All of Tualatin’s boards and committees are comprised of volunteers from the community who are appointed to serve a set term, typically three years. For most boards and committees, no special background or qualifications are needed. Instead, we’re looking for people with an interest in the topic, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn and engage with others. Most boards and committees also have a designated position for a young person under the age of 18.

All board and committee meetings are open to the public. Check out more information about each of our boards and committees below, including opportunities to apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Applications are available online when there is an opening for a board or committee. The application itself is short and will ask about your background and interest in serving on the board or committee. If you would prefer to fill out a paper copy, please contact our staff. All applicants will be invited for a short (15 minute) virtual interview with the Council Committee on Advisory Appointments. Following interviews, the Council Committee on Advisory Appointments makes a recommendation to the City Council for appointment. The total process typically takes a few months.

There are a ton of ways to get involved with the city! One of the easiest ways is to volunteer in another capacity. Volunteers help pull invasive species at parks, shelve books at the library, provide support at our special events like the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta, and so much more.

Every committee has a staff member assigned to support them. Their contact information is listed on the webpage for that particular board or committee. The staff member can answer questions and help you connect with others on the board or committee like the chair, vice chair, or City Council liaison. Finally, all meetings are open to the public and invite visitors to join them. Take a look at the webpage for the board or committee you are interested in for more information on their meeting schedule.

Most of our boards and committees have been established for some time and are described in the Tualatin Municipal Code. Some, like the Planning Commission and Budget Advisory Committee, are required by State Law. The City Council has the authority to create new permanent and ad hoc (temporary) committees. The newest permanent committee is the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access Advisory Committee (IDEA), which was established in 2023.
